Sonia is a Midwest girl through and through, born in Chicago and raised in St. Louis. Staying true to her roots, she attended Washington University in St. Louis for her undergradute studies. Although she was pre-med, she pursued her passion for the Humanities by majoring in History, studying abroad in London, and writing a thesis on the role of family dynamics in Tudor England court politics.
For medical school, she stayed in Missouri to attend University of Missouri-Columbia (MIZ!). As a medical student, Sonia discovered a passion for healthcare advocacy through the American Medical Association (AMA) and Missouri State Medical Association (MSMA). She held leadership positions at the regional, state and county levels. This allowed her to advocate on a number of issues, including medical student mental health, a state-wide prescription drug monitoring program, and expansion of GME programs. Through the MSMA, she also dabbled in healthcare policy, co-authoring a resolution seeking to investigate the steep drop-off in exclusive breastfeeding rates with more standardized data collection in conjunction with PBRNs.
Sonia is very excited to be joining the Med-Peds family at JMH! She hopes to take advantage of the amazing global health education at Jackson, continue her advocacy work on behalf of the unique patient population in Miami, and eventually pursue a career in transitional care for adolescents with chronic diseases.
